The Treo Pro (US$549) is Palm’s latest smartphone that features the following:
- Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional Edition operating system
- Qualcomm MSM7201 400MHz processor
- 256MB user memory (100MB user storage), 128MB program memory
- 320 x 320 pixel transflective color TFT touchscreen
- HSDPA/UMTS/EDGE/GPRS/GSM radio
- Tri-band UMTS - 850MHz, 1900MHz, 2100MHz
- Quad-band GSM - 850/900/1800/1900
- 802.11b/g WLAN
- Built-in GPS
- Bluetooth 2.0 with Enhanced Data Rate
- 2.0 megapixels digital camera, with video capture
- microSDHC cards (up to 32GB supported) expansion
- 1500 mAh Rechargeable lithium-ion battery
- dimensions: 2.36″ (W) x 4.49″ (L) x 0.53″ (D)
- weight: 4.69 oz
InfoSync World loved the thinner look, hardware improvements for the Treo line, good GPS options, and Windows Mobile performance. The Treo Pro was given a 64% rating (“Good”):
“… unlike more popular Windows Mobile manufacturers like HTC and Samsung, Palm has done little to nothing to improve the basic Windows Mobile experience. Register Hardware gave the Treo Pro an 80% rating:
“Some will criticise the Treo Pro for being neither fish nor fowl, but the option of being able to execute many of the device’s functions using either the touchscreen or the keyboard is not without attraction. On balance, it’s a smart, well-built, well-featured phone that is likely to serve its owners well. … An unusual but far from unusable Windows Mobile device that’s likely to appeal to the business rather than domestic user. The Gadgeteer liked the form factor, Wi-Fi, screen saver function, and flush display. Dislikes were high price, sluggish performance, bad video performance, the lack of tactile feedback of the buttons, and the difficulty of removing the back cover:
“I have to say that this is the first Treo that I’ve purchased that has disappointed me so badly. Although it looks very nice in my opinion, the way it performs is very underwhelming. Maybe it’s the fault of Windows Mobile or an underpowered CPU. I’m really not sure. If the Pro were running Palm OS, I wouldn’t like it any better… I suppose that the biggest reason why I don’t like this phone though is the buttons. That might seem like a trivial reason, but I’m all about how easy it is to use a device and the buttons on the Treo Pro are crummy. If only Palm had used the 800w design for their unlocked GSM phone instead of this one. I think my days of cheerleading for Palm are numbered unless they do something great soon. Looks like Palm wasn’t able to score much with its newest Windows Mobile smartphone. If you are actually shopping for a Win Mobile device, it probably is best to look at other offers from other manufacturers.
